Playing doctor
By LI EE KEE
Singaporean actor Edmund Chen talks to LI EE KEE about his passion for his profession in a telephone interview from the island republic.
In his past life, Edmund Chen must have been a doctor. Otherwise, how would one explain his affinity for the medical profession?
Throughout his 20-year acting career, he has played a general practitioner, pathologist, gynaecologist, psychologist, ophthalmologist and urologist. If you have watched First Touch on Ntv7 and seen the ease with which he played a gynaecologist, you’ll understand why he is a favourite to play doctors.
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a192/soursand/p19Edmund.jpg
“It is tough playing doctors in Singapore. It’s not merely delivering the role convincingly but you also have an image to portray. Although they’re human beings you have to project them as super humans. It’s a challenge, particularly the terminologies. They are really difficult, especially in English.
“But in Double Happiness, the focus is not on my profession (he plays a urologist),” he said during a recent phone interview.
Chen’s foray into acting happened by chance. In 1989, he was accompanying several friends who were enrolling for MediaCorp's acting course when on a whim, he decided to also register.
“I was in my late 20s at the time. I loved the arts like drawing, graphic design and illustration but acting never crossed my mind. I am an extrovert, and was always engaged in outdoor or sporting activities – I hardly watched TV,” said Chen.
“Before this, I’d never been with a company for more than three to four years, so this was unexpected. But I have enjoyed the fruits of my work and it has become my life.
“Various avenues are available to anyone who wants to become an actor. But to stay in the game, you need to work hard and have an open mind.”
Chen, who films between three to four TV serials a year, agreed that his good looks have, in some ways, helped him in his career.
However, he was quick to add that if an actor wants to enjoy a longer career, he needs to offer viewers something more.
“There needs to be something from the inside. It’s about your commitment to what you do that makes you a good actor and one that people want to watch.”
Having acted for two decades, there are no particular roles that the 40-something ver-satile actor, who also has four Mandarin albums and a Spanish single to his name, wants to play.
“I have even played a mute. Every role is a challenge. There was a time when I kept getting the same roles that it became difficult to interpret. But as an actor, it is my job to find depth in the role.
After four years of working incessantly, Chen is currently taking a break, spending time with his kids and preparing for his role in a movie to be shot soon in Vietnam, where he will be filming with an international cast. Chen’s other notable film credits include The Eye (2002) and Turn Left, Turn Right (2003).
For now, viewers can catch him in Double Happiness, where he co-stars with his wife, Xiang Yun, who acts as his sibling. They have been married for 16 years and have two children aged 14 and five. They first met on the set of Mystery (1988) but it was in Patrol (1989) that sparks flew.
“Getting married and having kids changes your lifestyle and grounds you. It can be difficult balancing your responsibilities but I have my priorities and I am grateful that my company understands. It helps that my wife is also in the same industry, so she understands. But if we’re both busy, we’ll deploy the grandparents,” he noted with a laugh.
Double Happiness is aired every Monday to Friday at 5pm on 8TV.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
By the way, this journalist doesn't know that Double Happiness Part 1 had ended..
and Media Corp shows are air from Monday to Thursday, and NOT to FRIDAY :mad0218:
And Double Happiness Part 2 will be aired in 8TV very soon, I guess after Timeless Gift
